Why Doesn’t My Furnace Ever Turn Off in Yorktown, VA?

As fall rolls into winter for the Yorktown, VA area, the need for a properly working furnace increases. Unfortunately, many homeowners experience issues with their furnaces once they ramp up their usage. Here are some common issues to look for when your furnace doesn’t shut off.

Dirty Air Filter

A dirty air filter restricts the flow of air into your HVAC system. When this happens, your furnace may overheat. This causes the furnace’s fan to continue to run as it tries to cool the appliance.

Faulty Limit Switch

The limit switch is a component that controls the heat in your furnace. When the thermometer tells the furnace it’s time to turn on, the switch signals the furnace. If the limit switch is faulty, these signals could get mixed up, and it will signal the furnace to turn on when it should be shutting down.

Thermostat Settings

When you set your thermostat to an abnormally high temperature, your furnace may have issues reaching that setting. If your furnace is undersized, it may have to run continually to achieve and maintain that temperature.

Leaky Air Ducts

Leaky ductwork is a common reason for a malfunctioning furnace. The leaks allow the hot air to escape before reaching all the rooms in your home. This makes it difficult for your furnace to reach the temperature set on the thermostat, leading to continuous operation.

Blocked Vents

Obstructed vents block the airflow into a room and can lead to uneven heating. When this happens, your furnace will work overtime to compensate for the uneven heating. Make sure your heating vents are clean and free of any blockage.

Temperature settings, well-maintained parts, and clear airways all impact the performance of your furnace. If you’re experiencing issues with your home’s furnace, contact our team at Lighthouse Mechanical Heating and Cooling, and we will be glad to fix the problem.
